国連「Energy Statistics Yearbook」の2003年版と2004年版で，表６「石炭の産出量」のうち，特にアメリカの数値が大きく減少していました。

この件について，国連統計局（United Nations Statistics Division）のAssociate Statisticianに問い合わせたところ，以下の返答を得ました。

As regards the coal revision for the US: what happens is that we receive data for OECD member countries from the International Energy Agency (IEA), with whom we have a data sharing agreement to reduce response burden on countries. However, our definitions of hard coal and lignite/brown coal are different from those of IEA. In our definition, sub-bituminous coal (a subcategory of coal) is included under lignite/brown coal; whereas in IEA's definition it is included under hard coal. When we noticed the discrepancy between our stated definition and our reported figures, we proceeded to revise data. Rest assured that the amount taken from hard coal (approximately 400 million tonnes) appears now under lignite/brown coal, and corresponds to sub-bituminous coal.

《意訳》OECD加盟国のデータは，各国の回答の手間を省くためにIEAと共有しています。しかし，硬炭＝石炭（Hard Coal）と亜炭・褐炭（lignite/brown coal）の定義がIEAと国連とでは異なります。国連では，亜瀝青炭（sub-bituminous coal）は亜炭・褐炭に含むのですが，IEAでは硬炭に含んでいます。定義と報告数字の食い違いが判明し，データを改訂しました。硬炭から除かれた量 は，亜炭・褐炭の増えた量と対応しておりますのでご安心下さい。
